ISLAMABAD: The government on Friday said that Mukhtara Mai will be provided legal assistance and security.

Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said that he had been directed by Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to provide security for Mukhtara Mai, for which the Punjab Police would be responsible. The government would also assist her in filing her appeal against the Supreme Courts ruling, he added.

Mukhtara Mai was gang-raped in 2002 after a decision by the village Panchayat. On Thursday a three-member bench of the Supreme Court rejected her appeal of a Lahore High Court decision. The court acquitted five of the six accused suspects.
