MUZAFFARABAD, April 9: The proposed devolution of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) would fan provincialism as it would also push the country 50 years back.
These views were expressed by the speakers while addressing a protest demonstration staged on the city campus of the AJK University on Saturday against the proposed devolution of the Higher Education Commission (HEC).
The protest demonstration was jointly organised by Academic Staff Association, Officers Welfare Association and Administrative Staff Association and was attended by a large number of students of the university.
The participants were carrying banners and placards inscribed with slogans against the proposed devolution of the HEC.
“Save HEC, Save Education, Save Pakistan,” read one placard.
Speaking on the occasion, President Academic Staff Association Imtiaz Awan said that the HEC devolution would not on ly affect the standard of higher education in the country but would also cause innumerable problems for the members of the faculty currently pursuing further studies in foreign countries on scholarships.
Devolution of the Higher Education Commission to the provinces would be disastrous for the universities, he warned urging the federal government to shelve this plan.
Speaking on behalf of the Officer Welfare Association, Zafar Iqbal listed the HEC achievements over the last eight years and said that 3280 scholars earned doctorate degrees in the past eight years while prior to the HEC scholarship programme the country produced only 3,000 PhDs.
Mr Iqbal said the HEC devolution would particularly affect the AJK University because the AJK government was not in a position to meet its financial requirements.
Others who spoke on the occasion included Prof Dr Ansar Yasin, Prof Siddique Awan, Prof Nuzhat Shafi, Naveed Sarwar, Mohammad Asif and Maheen Mushtaq.
